PITTSFIELD — The Town Council has approved spending $47,000 in state grant funding to improve and maintain snowmobile trails covering about 40 miles in the Pittsfield area.

The Pittsfield Driftbusters Snowmobile Club is to oversee the improvement and maintenance efforts, according to plans that town councilors approved last Tuesday.

The plans call for improving the alignment of some trails, installing trail signs and better grooming, according to an application filed by the club’s trail master, Blaine Huff.

Officials from Pittsfield and the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry intend to work with the snowmobile club to maintain trails ahead of the snowmobiling season, according to the application. The trails extend into Burnham, Clinton, Newport and Palmyra.

The club maintains two additional trails, one to the west of Pittsfield and the other to the industrial park in town.

The application notes the club’s efforts to meet the needs of snowmobilers by having trails with access to food, gas and other amenities.
