Joseph “Ted” Huard

LITCHFIELD – It is with a heavy, sad heart that the family announces the passing of Joseph “Ted” Huard on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, at home. With his family by his side, he fought the long, tough battle against Parkinson’s disease.

Ted was born on July 18, 1941, in Waterville to Rose Olivine (Laprice) and Noe Joseph Huard.

After graduating from Winslow High School, Ted enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly, and very secretively, held a position in the computer intelligence division. He transferred his computer skills to a career in finance after retiring from the Air Force. He held positions in banking until he opened the Huard Agency, a medical billing agency, that he owned and operated for several years.

Ted loved sports, especially high school sports. He could and would talk sports with anyone for hours. His favorite sports discussions involved reminiscing about his high school days. Ted earned many sports accolades at Winslow High School including, but certainly not limited to, javelin throwing records and being an integral member of the undefeated 1958 Class B State Championship team. You could find him talking and visiting for hours with his high school football coach, Wally LaFountain. They even strategized and were unofficial color commentators for the New England Patriots. The only thing he loved more than talking about sports was watching his family play, particularly his daughter, Heidi who played soccer, basketball, and softball and then supporting his grandchildren in their various extracurricular endeavors.

Spending time in the Maine outdoors and woods was another passion of his. He and his childhood best friend, Arthur “Pete” Bourget enjoyed moose hunting and fishing up north. He enjoyed hunting with his grandsons, berry and fiddlehead foraging with his granddaughter, and fishing with anyone who could cast, especially his daughter, Robin. Gardening, kitchen-window birdwatching, camping on the ocean, hanging out on the lobster boat, clamming, and enjoying a big scoop of ice cream were also some of the many things he thoroughly enjoyed.

He was predeceased by the love of his life and soulmate of over 50 years, Constance “Connie” Huard; sisters Charmaine Savasuk and Georgette Henderson; children Bruce Chesley and Terry Wood; and many cherished cats and dogs he considered family.

Ted is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Robin and David Cummings and Heidi and Kevin Martin; grandchildren Esther Jean, Grant Chesley, Sarah and Jeff St. Pierre, Teddy and Amanda Wood, David and Sharon Cummings, Michael and Sarah Cummings, Jackson Martin, and Gunnar Martin; sister, Lorrain Siviski; and several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family, and close friends.

The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the Veterans Hospital, MaineGeneral in Augusta, and especially the Beacon Hospice nurses and staff. We are grateful for your care, support, and thoughtfulness.

Ted’s service will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta, on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 9 a.m. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow until 1 p.m. at the Augusta Elks Lodge #964, 397 Civic Center Dr., Augusta. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.

Arrangements are in the care of the Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop where condolences and memories may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the funeral home website by visiting http://www.khrfuneralhomes.com.
