Thomas Clayton Alward

READFIELD – Thomas Clayton Alward, 72, of Readfield, went to be with the Lord on Oct. 11, 2023, at MMC in Portland, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born at home in Patten on July 5, 1951, to the late Rev Clayton and Betty (Porter) Alward.

Thomas was a loving husband to Sherrie Alward, his best friend and partner in life for 40 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Merri Alward; sisters Kathy Brown, Christina Pagliaroli, and Martha Alward; father-in-law, Silas Lawrence, of Pittston; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Brooke.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Daniel Alward and Clayton Alward, Jr.

Thomas received his education at Monmouth Academy in Monmouth. He retired from the State of Maine Department of Transportation.

Through his gospel singing ministry at churches throughout Maine, Thomas shared his love for Jesus. He also loved animals, especially dogs and horses. He had several over the years and held each one close in his heart. Thomas had a heart for helping others in need and did so often.

Thomas was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. He was especially proud of his heritage in Patten, and he and Sherrie made many happy memories staying on his land in Mt. Chase. They also enjoyed running their lemonade stand at various Maine fairs each summer.

Thomas will be deeply missed by his loved ones and all who knew him. He will be remembered by those whose lives he touched in many ways.

Friends may call on Wednesday Oct. 18, from 11 to 1 p.m. at the Kennebec Valley Assembly of God, 44 Hallowell Rd., Chelsea, with a funeral service being held at 1 p.m. Interment will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 19, at Hodgdon Cemetery.
