WATERVILLE — Workers from Sheridan Construction Corp. of Fairfield removed the steeple Wednesday atop the Children’s Discovery Museum of Central Maine in Waterville.
The 57-foot steeple, which housed a Revere bell, was part of the First Congregational United Church of Christ at 7 Eustis Parkway, according to Caitlin Walker, the museum’s programs and community relations coordinator.
The church sold the building to the museum in 2020. The building was built in 1966.
“The steeple is being removed as part of the mission to bring a new place to play, learn and grow to the Waterville area,” Walker said.
The Congregational Church leases space for services and other activities in the basement of The Elm at 21 College Ave. The museum holds events for children and others but is not yet officially open.
The work to remove the steeple was slowed by a hydraulic problem with the crane that was brought in to lift the steeple from the building. The problem was resolved and the removal was completed later Wednesday.
