Bertha L. Johnson

MONMOUTH – Bertha L. Johnson, 97, a longtime resident of Monmouth, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023, at her residence. She was born Jan. 12, 1926, in Monmouth, the daughter of Raymond and Marion (Buckley) Leavitt. She was a graduate of Monmouth Academy. In 1946 in Monmouth, she married Wesley I. Johnson. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage before his passing on August 13, 2008. Bertha worked various jobs through the years. She was a correspondent for Monmouth for the Sun Journal. Later she was a rural carrier for the United States Postal Service, where she worked until her retirement. She was a member of the Greene Senior Citizens Club, Maine Wheels RV club and attended the United Church of Monmouth. Bertha enjoyed doing crafts, painting, and playing cards. She is survived by her daughter, Penelope “Penny” Bornstein Johnson and husband Milton Bornstein of Tavares, Florida and her son Gregory “Greg” Johnson and wife Harriet Goldberg of Brooklyn, New York. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, October 28, at BRAGDON-FINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 707 Main Street, Monmouth, Maine. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, Maine.
