Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is out for Sunday’s game against the Jets, and Coach Brian Daboll could not answer in the affirmative on Friday if Jones will be able to play again this season.

“I appreciate the questions. I’m not going to give you an answer that I don’t have right now,” Daboll said, after avoiding several opportunities to assure Jones will be back, dramatically different from Daboll’s unequivocal answer last week that Jones’ season is “not over.”

But this would follow the same pattern as Jones’ 2021 shutdown that the Giants initially conveyed as an optimistic, week-to-week neck injury with the same medical staff.

Daboll also revealed Jones has been taking scout team reps in practice since last week. Still, Jones was listed as questionable last week for the Washington game, and now he’s been ruled completely out on Friday for the Jets game.

So Tyrod Taylor will start a third straight game when the Giants (2-5) host the Jets (3-3) Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Taylor is 1-1 as the starter so far.

Daboll was asked Friday if his recent assertion that Jones’ season was “not over” was based on medical information or hope.

“I’m not going to go back to that,” the coach said. “Appreciate the question. I’d just say he’s getting better, and we’ll see where he is next week.”

So Daboll was asked again: does he think Jones will play again this year?

“He’s getting better, and we’ll see where he is next week,” Daboll said. “I don’t have a crystal ball with injuries, but he is getting better, and we’ll see where he is next week.”

JETS: New York starting cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed cleared the concussion protocol and will play against the Giants on Sunday.

Coach Robert Saleh announced both Gardner and Reed are “good to go” after practicing fully this week.

49ERS: San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy was a full participant in practice Friday and could be cleared from his concussion to play this weekend against Cincinnati.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy still must clear a final step on Saturday in order to play Sunday against the Bengals. He is listed as questionable. Purdy got hit in the helmet late in Monday night’s loss at Minnesota. He reported concussion symptoms on the flight home and was placed into the protocol.

JAGUARS: Jacksonville receiver Zay Jones won’t play at Pittsburgh on Sunday because of a lingering right knee injury.

Coach Doug Pederson ruled Jones out, saying he will miss his fifth game in six weeks. Since the Jaguars (5-2) have a bye after facing the Steelers, Jones will have extra time to get healthy before the team’s Nov. 12 game against the 49ers.

“We’ll see where he’s at after (the bye),” Pederson said.

BROWNS: Cleveland starting running back Jerome Ford made a surprise return to practice after missing time earlier this week with a sprained right ankle suffered in last week’s win at Indianapolis.

Ford, who has had to pick up the slack with star Nick Chubb out with a season-ending knee injury, is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at Seattle. Ford had been expected to miss at least one game.

CHIEFS: The NFL placed Kansas City Chiefs Justyn Ross on the Commissioner Exempt List, three days after he pleaded not guilty to charges of misdemeanor domestic battery and criminal damage to property.

Ross is not allowed to practice or attend games while on the list. Ross was released from jail Tuesday after posting $2,500 bond. He is due again in court on Dec. 4. The Chiefs said they were aware of his arrest but had no comment.

Ross was arrested Monday, and the sheriff’s office in Johnson County, Kansas, originally indicated on his booking record that he was accused of causing damage of up to $25,000, which would have been a felony. That total was adjusted to under $1,000.

The 23-year-old Ross has been a bit player for the defending Super Bowl champions this season. He has been active in their first seven games but has just three catches for 34 yards.
