AUGUSTA – Richard J. Smith, 93, passed away at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor on Oct. 23, 2023. He was born in New York City on Sept. 14, 1930, a son of Frank and Martha (Nelinaber) Smith.

Richard grew up in New York where he graduated from high school. As a child, his summers were spent on Cobbosseecontee Lake. Following school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country. Upon his honorable discharge, he earned his bachelor’s degree from The University of New York, College of Engineering. An intelligent man, Dick spent his career working as an engineer. His last place of employment was Digital Corporation in Augusta where he was the supervisor of engineering. He was married to Theresa Boucher for many years before her passing in 2002.

Richard was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish; one of his favorite places to go was camp on Moosehead Lake. A tech guy, he also enjoyed computers, building them and learning about them. Dick was a Sudoku master and was an accomplished artist, creating many beautiful paintings over the years. On March 8, 2004, he married Ingrid Obery, and they spent many happy years together before her passing in 2018.

He is survived by his stepchildren, Shirley Barry and her husband Charles Barry, William Peaslee, Heidi Peaslee, and Hans Peaslee and his spouse Deb Patterson. He is also survived by 11 stepgrandchildren, and many great-stepgrandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Theresa Smith; his second wife, Ingrid Obery; his siblings; and his son.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023, at 2 p.m., at Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Road, Augusta, ME 04330.
