GARDINER – Barbara Helen Veregge, 76, of Gardiner, passed away on Oct. 20, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.

Barbara was an utterly selfless woman who dedicated her life to helping others, particularly children through the Maine foster care system. Her heart, home, and love had no limitations as she fostered and welcomed over 200 children into her home over the span of five decades. Ten of these children permanently joined the Veregge family through adoption. Barbara’s generosity and kindness extended to anyone in need, providing hot meals, a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen or talk to, or a bed to sleep in.

Barbara is survived by her beloved brothers Bob and Darrel, and her children, David Veregge, Julie Phipps and husband Andy, Steven Veregge and wife Lisa, Elizabeth Veregge, Vanessa Veregge, Amber Arsenault and husband Garrett, Emily Veregge and Kerry Ramsay, Andrew Veregge, Lily Kelley and husband John, Annie Veregge, and Austin Veregge. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Clark, her father, Stanley Groh; and her husband, Gerald Veregge.

Barbara attended SMCC, for business administration. She was a dedicated member of her community, devoting her life to helping others.
