Ruth “Betty” Belz

WINTHROP – Ruth “Betty” Belz, 80, passed away on Oct. 20, 2023, at the Androscoggin Hospice House with her loving husband by her side.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1942, in Augusta, the daughter of Stanley and Margaret Farrington.

She lived in Winthrop her entire life graduating from Winthrop High School, class of 1961. Shortly thereafter, Betty and the love of her life, Alber “Jack” Belz Jr., were married July 6, 1963, and they shared 60 wonderful years together.

After high school, Betty went on to work for the Augusta Gas Company and Nicholson Nursing Home. She happily retired from the Department of Transportation after 32 years of service.

In her free time, Betty deeply enjoyed time spent with her family and friends. One of her favorite pastimes was shopping, especially for Christmas gifts. Often you could find Betty on a walk with her friends. One of her greatest qualities was her generosity. She often reached out a helping hand to others with her time, thoughtfulness, and kindness. She doted on her family and cherished attending her grandchildren’s events and sharing in their accomplishments.

Betty was predeceased by her parents Stanley and Margaret; a sister, Jeanette Gallagher, and a brother, Newell Farrington.

She leaves behind her loving husband, Albert of Winthrop; son, Darryl Belz and his wife Susan of Winthrop and their daughters Brooke and Erica; as well as many close friends.

The family would like to thank the incredible staff at Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice and Felicia from Right at Home for the wonderful care and compassion they have shown to Betty and her family.

A time for visiting will be held on Thursday Nov. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A private burial will be held in Glenside Cemetery.
