Walter G. MacFarland

WINTHROP – Walter G. MacFarland, 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023.

Walter was born in Augusta where he graduated from Cony High School. Walter went on to enlist in the Air Force and served four years of active duty. Walter had a very long and successful career with Pine State Trading Co. He attended the University of Maine at Augusta in the evenings and studied psychology.

Walter met the love of his life, Jeanne, when he was just 14. He shared their love story often and was proud of his wife and best friend. As a young couple, they enjoyed tent camping, white water canoeing and hiking. Walter enjoyed driving his motorcycle, mud football, bow hunting, fishing, and photography. As their children got older, Walter took them skiing, attended their games and dance recitals. As dedicated as Walter was to his work, he made spending time with his family a priority.

After retirement, Walter and Jeanne enjoyed summers on Annabessacook Lake at Augusta West in Winthrop and winters in Delray Beach, Fla. until Jeanne passed away in 2021. Walter continued to summer with his camp family and spent time with friends by the lake. Walter was known for his generosity, work ethic and playful sense of humor.

Walter is survived by his son, Michael and his wife Laurel of Mount Vernon, daughter, Kelly and her husband Eric of Natick, Mass.; beloved grandchildren, Morgan, Taite, Michael, Blaike and Brodie; great-granddaughters, Nimueh and Andromeda; as well as many cousins; family; and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Nov. 12 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A private ceremony will be held the following day at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta.
