WINSLOW — The Winslow football team is putting forth its best effort at the right time.

Led by the rushing of senior Matt Quirion (238 yards) and sophomore Liem Fortin (137 yards), the No. 4 Black Raiders rolled to a 55-14 win over No. 5 Maine Central Institute in a Class D North quarterfinal at Poulin Field on Tuesday afternoon. Winslow (4-5) will meet No. 1 Foxcroft Academy (8-0) in the semifinals. The Black Raiders hosted the Ponies on Oct. 21, falling 35-14.

“I love this team, and it felt great to get a win like that,” Quirion said. “Me and Liem, together, we feel like a dual threat. It’s a weapon.”

MCI finished 1-8.

Fortin had five touchdown runs, while Quirion had three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving). Quirion also had four receptions for 74 yards. Fortin and Quirion had an equal workload in the backfield, as each had 19 carries.

“To be behind this team and to play with Matt Quirion, it’s just amazing,” Fortin said.

Up 34-14 at halftime, the Winslow defense forced three interceptions out of MCI quarterback Caleb Kennedy, two by senior defensive back Davian Costigan. Using its vaunted double-wing offense, the Black Raiders had no trouble getting push and positive yardage in the run game.

“(The offensive line) all played to their best potential and put (MCI players) on the ground,” Fortin said.

“I think we’ve become a little more dynamic (offensively),” Winslow head coach Wes Littlefield said. “We can spread things out, we can go double-wing. I like it. Our kids love it and they buy into it. We like where we are right now.”

Winslow was also a perfect 6 of 6 passing on the day. Fortin was 3 of 3 for 54 yards, while junior quarterback Tucker Pomerleau, in his return from injury, was 3 of 3 for 51 yards and a touchdown.

“With all the things happening and our kids not getting a lot of practice time, it was nice to come out here and have a good statement game, to get ready to go see Foxcroft,” Littlefield said.

The Huskies showed fight throughout, and moved the ball with their spread passing attack. Kennedy, a junior, was 26 of 52 passing for 267 yards and two touchdowns, along with his three interceptions. Junior wide receiver Drew Shorey had 12 receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns. He had a highlight-reel touchdown grab just before halftime, a jump-ball catch on a deep pass from Kennedy for a 35-yard scoring strike.
