Gordon Edward Hillier

AUGUSTA – Gordon Edward Hillier, 101, died peacefully in the Augusta, Maine, Veterans Home on Oct. 26, 2023.

He was born in Augusta on Nov. 16, 1921, and was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Barbara Marie (King) Hillier, father Wilfred Hillier, mother Harriet (Brown) Hillier, three brothers, Robert, William, Lewis, and his sister Harriet (Hillier) Byrne.

Raised on the family’s farm in Farmingdale, Maine, Gordon graduated from Cony High School in the class of 1942. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served with the 9th Air Force Headquarters Squadron in the U.S. and in France and Germany during World War II.

Home from the war, he made a career of serving on the Maine Air National Guard headquarters staff at Camp Keyes in Augusta, Maine. His air national guard squadron was activated during the Korean War. After deactivation he put down roots in Readfield, Maine where, with Barbara, he raised two sons Chester (Chuck) Gordon Hillier of Monmouth, Maine, and James Edward Hillier of Ormond Beach Florida and Rangeley, Maine, both of whom survive him.

He is also survived by daughters-in-law Debora Hillier and Ginger Jordan-Hillier, grandchildren Jonathan, Kaitlin, Daniel, Benjamin and Troy and great grandchildren, Truman, Hazel, Avery, Isaac, and Zachary.

Gordon and Barbara participated in many local activities and were founding members of Readfield’s “Little Town Club”, Public Library and Readfield Cub Scouts. Barbara sang in the Methodist Choir and Gordon was a Master Mason in Readfield’s Lafayette Lodge for more than 70 years. He also served as Scout Master of Readfield’s Boy scout Troop 450. In 2017 Gordon received the Boston Post Cane as Readfield’s oldest resident.

Gordon enjoyed playing baseball (third base), piloting a Piper Cub airplane in Maine skies, sketching and drawing, making improvements to the family camp in Phippsburg, playing golf and gardening. He often gave fresh-cut flowers to neighbors and passersby.

At his request, there will be no memorial ceremony. Burial will be private.
