Miriam “Mitzi” Cushing

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Miriam “Mitzi” Cushing departed to reunite with her daughter, granddaughter and family on July 21, 2023.

Mitzi was born on Sept. 9, 1939 in San Diego, Calif. She was the eldest daughter of Neil and Cynthia Curtin and spent the majority of her adolescent life living in varied locations due to her father’s naval career.

While attending Wheelock College in 1959, she married husband, Philbrook Cushing, and they spent 64 wonderful years together, having two children, Peter and Brooke.

After many years in Santa Barbara, Calif. and Gilmanton, N.H., they settled in The Woodlands, Texas in 1994. Her passion for children and education led her to the John Cooper School where she was a teacher’s assistant from 1995 until 2011. But her real home was always her family’s camp “Oak Circle” on Great Pond in Belgrade Lakes where she spent every summer and many falls.

Mitzi was preceded in death by her father and mother; daughter, Brooke; and granddaughter, Gelsey.

She is survived by husband, Philbrook; son, Peter and daughter-in-law Jennifer; granddaughters Sanger and Caillean; sister, Randi Sanger and brother-in-law, John Sanger, brother, Mark Curtin; nephew, Christian Curtin; as well as countless other family members and friends who she greatly cherished.

We will be remembering Mitzi with a celebration of her life on Nov. 12 at the Retreat, 8553 Burdekin Rd., Magnolia, Texas from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The family and close friends will be sharing memories of her wonderful life and we would like to extend the invitation to all who cared for her.
