Pauline V. (Violette) Garland

DEDHAM, Maine/SOUTH PASADENA, Fla. – Pauline V. (Violette) Garland, 80, passed peacefully on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta with family at her side.

She was born in Augusta, a daughter of Amedee and Christine (Lacasse) Violette and attended St. Augustine Catholic School and graduated from Cony High School (61). Growing up she worked at Sunset Market, which her parents owned. She worked at LaVerdiere’s and Viner’s Music both in Bangor. She retired as a receptionist from Eastern Fine Paper in Brewer.

In 1988, she married Phillip Garland, and they became snowbirds. They enjoyed social gatherings with their Bay Island Community friends and their summers at their quiet oasis on Green Lake.

Pauline enjoyed crafting, knitting, playing Farkle, and dancing. Fitness was a focus in her life. She had attained her black belt in Karate earlier and continued exercising and walking many miles daily. She was very beautiful inside and out. She was a humble, hardworking, warm, and nurturing woman. She is loved by all and will be missed immensely.

Surviving Pauline is her son, Mark Howell and his wife Rebecca; grandchildren Garrett and Clayton Howell and Clay’s wife Lenore; sisters Carmen Thibodeau, Arlene Garwood and her husband Joe; aunt Lucienne Lacasse Arbour; nieces and nephews Karen Otten, Claire Burns, Tyler Pruett, and Erika Turner. She also had many great nieces and nephews, Kristin, Bradley, Nathan, Max, Mackenzie, Josie, Sophie, Lucy, Reve and Teague; some of whom affectionately called her “Ma Tante Tanante”.

Pauline’s stepchildren from the Garland family include Jonni-Anne Carlisle and her husband Colin, Jane Demaso and her husband John, Joseph Garland, and Jayson Shubert and his wife Allison; grandchildren Tiffany Milligan, Abigail, Joshua and Michael Garland, and William Shubert. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Phil; stepson James Garland; grandson Adam Carlisle; sister Diane Pruett; and former husband Richard Howell.

The family also wishes to thank the Maine Veterans Home and Androscoggin Hospice for the wonderful care given to Pauline during her stay.

A Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, 2023, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 75 Northern Avenue, Augusta, ME 04330. A celebration of life will follow the church service at the Calumet Club, 334 W River Rd, Augusta, ME 04330.
