Donald V. Coston

LITCHFIELD – Donald V. Coston, 87, died on Nov. 4, 2023, at the Togus VA Hospice.

Don was born on Dec. 6, 1935, in Palmyra, a son of the late Francis and Elsie (Ludden) Coston and Ardis (McPherson) Coston. He proudly served 21 years in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era and retired in 1975. From there he joined the Civil Service at the Brunswick Naval Air Station working in Security until retiring a second time after 21 years in 2007.

Don was a 1991 graduate of Husson College. He was an active participant in the National Veteran’s Golden Age Games representing Maine in 2012 in St. Louis, Mo.; 2017 in Biloxi, Miss., and 2018 in Albuquerque, N.M., winning seven medals in track and swimming. For many years he was a member of the Shriners out of the Masonic Lodge at the Kora Temple in Lewiston, Maine. He loved sitting down for a lively game of cribbage, enjoyed boating and family time on the lake. He was also a diehard fan of NASCAR; Dale Earnhardt and Kyle Busch could do no wrong!

He is survived by his loving wife, Sonja Coston; children: Joseph Coston and wife Jeanne; Shawn Coston and wife Kristin, Shane Coston and wife Donna, Dustin Coston and wife Kelly, Heather Wakem and husband Jeff, and Heidi Ruddell and husband Richard; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Berry Coston and wife Betty; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; children: Theresa and Richard; infant son, Damon; and two brothers: Roger and Larry.

A time of visiting will be held from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring of 2024 at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 152, Hartland.
