Jerome “Jerry” Francis Thomas

GARDINER – Jerome “Jerry” Francis Thomas, 75, passed away on Nov. 3, 2023, at his home. He was born on Jan. 13, 1948, a son of Richard and Ruth (Corbett) Thomas.

Jerry grew up in Augusta and attended local schools, graduating from Cony High School in the class of 1968. Following school, he spent 13 years serving in the medical unit of the Army Reserve out of Auburn. He spent many years working as a mental health worker at AMHI and also worked at Togus VA Medical Center as a mental health worker and supply tech. Lastly, Jerry worked at Hannaford Supermarket for 27 years a s a service clerk.

At 39 years old, Jerry suffered a brain hemmorhage, but that didn’t stop him. Despite numerous medical challenges, he was always giving you that smile of his. He loved talking with people and walking around shopping malls and stopping for coffee or lunch.

He married the love of his life, Susane Chabot Thomas, on Oct. 8, 1977 at St. Augustine Church. Jerry was a devout communicant of St. Michael’s Parish, attending St. Augustine, St. Joseph’s, and St. Mary’s at different time in his life. Jerry was a 3rd degree Knight with Council #1299 in Gardiner, and a 4th degree Knight with Assembly #348 in Gardiner. In addition, he served as a Eucaristic Minister from 1985 until 2015 and was also a Cursillista.

Jerry loved candlepin bowling at the 1-7-10. Despite his physical limitations, he always laughed and had a good time. He had a love for classic cars and without hesitation could identify the make and year; when asked how he knew the year, he would spit right out what had been changed! He loved gatherings with family and friends. Jerry will be remembered for his love for the simple things in life, his smile, and his gentle soul.

He was predeceased by his parents; and brothers-in-laws, Andre Denis Chabot and Ronald Chabot.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 46 years, Susane Thomas; his sister, Agnes Milligan and her husband, Jim, brothers-in-law, Gaeton Chabot and Reginald Chabot, and sister-in-law, Roxanne Zibura; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

A period of visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330 where the Knights of Columbus will recite the Rosary beginning at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 75 Northern Ave., Augusta, ME 04330.
