Songs from Across the Sea: Colby Choirs to Present Fall Concert
The Choirs at Colby will present their fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in Colby College’s new Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts.
Entitled “Canções D’Além Mar,” or “Songs from Across the Sea,” the program consists of 12 works, each in a different language, from five continents. The choir will sing in Ukrainian, Haitian Creole, Mohawk, Brazilian Portuguese, Tamil, Syriac, Turkish, Chinese, Hebrew, Spanish, Zulu, and the lost language of the Kraò Indians of the Brazilian rain forest. The Colby Eight, the venerable, student-run, a capella group, will be featured guests in one of the songs.
The centerpiece of the program is Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez’s Misa Criolla, or “Creole Mass.” Rooted in Latin American folk music traditions and using a Spanish translation of the traditional Catholic mass, this 23-minute mass infuses sacred liturgy with vibrant rhythms and melodies. Joining the choirs for that piece will be the Elqui Ensemble, a professional quartet whose members play guitar, viola, and Andean percussion and woodwind instruments.
