Donald Kermit Schrock Sr.

WINTHROP – Donald Kermit Schrock Sr., 92, of Winthrop, passed away surrounded by the outdoors, on Nov. 8, 2023, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Punxsutawney, Pa., on Oct. 3, 1931, the youngest son of Jeanette (Snyder) and Ezra Schrock.

Don (Kerm) graduated from Punxsutawney High School before embarking on his 39-year career with International Paper. He joined his father in 1951 at the paper mill in Tonawanda, NY. He was handed a broom on his first day and worked his way up to a management position. In 1976, when the mill closed, he was transferred to the Androscoggin Mill in Jay, ME. Upon his retirement in 1990, he and his wife bought a home on Maranacook Lake in Winthrop, where he thoroughly enjoyed his next 30 years.

Once settled in Winthrop, he began volunteering at the Winthrop Food Pantry and continued to serve for many years. He believed no one should go hungry.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting with his father-in-law in Pennsylvania, and frequently talked of their trip to Wyoming for pheasant hunting. When his son was old enough, he joined them for many outings. Don was passionate about gun safety and gun control.

He also enjoyed fishing and was a member, along with his son, with the BronzeBack Maniacs bass fishing league. He has many trophies, all be it for the smallest fish, but he loved it anyways.

He and his wife and children traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada. Starting out with a tent, camping and seeing the country was a much-anticipated pleasure. The best trip … recreating the path of their honeymoon out West for their 50th wedding anniversary. Trading in the pink Cadillac with a soft top (his bride’s) for a sturdier RV.

Don liked the game of football, having played running back in high school. He was a fan from inception of the Buffalo Bills and he passed the cheering onto his children, taking them to many Bills games from a very young age. He rarely missed watching the games with his daughter and got a laugh out of her spot-on officiating and replay calling. A recent day spent at the Football Hall of Fame in Canton with her held cherished memories. He cheered for the Red Sox as well … most years.

He lived life to the fullest and always with a touch of mischief and making friends along the way. Climbing an apple tree at the young age of 88 years .. because the best apples were at the top.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Janet (Kiehl) Schrock; and one half of his pride and joy, his daughter Teri Schrock of Topsham. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by the other half of his pride and joy, his son Donald Schrock, formally from Jay; his parents and his adored in-laws, Gene and Hazel (Stahlman) Kiehl of Punxsutawney, Pa.; his siblings, Clayton, Earl, Merle, and Merenia.

Thank you to Winthrop Rescue and the Winthrop and Monmouth Police for their assistance and kindness at the time of his passing. A special thank you to Paul Cottrell, for being his bud to the end.

At Don’s request there will be no services. Simply remember him and enjoy life like he would have.

Burial will be in the spring at the Worthville Cemetery in Worthville, Pa.
