ATHENS — An Athens man died Thursday morning when his pickup truck veered off Chapman Ridge Road and crashed into a ditch, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

James Troy, 65, was traveling southbound in a 2007 Ford F-150 when he swerved, overcorrected and crashed, sheriff’s Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell said.

Troy was found dead at the scene, and extrication tools had to be used to remove him from the pickup truck, Mitchell said.

The Sheriff’s Office, the Athens Fire Department, the Madison Fire Department and Redington-Fairview General Hospital EMS responded to the crash.

No other vehicle was involved, Mitchell said, and Troy was traveling alone.

The call was reported shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Deputy Michael Lyman and Lt. Michael Knight were investigating the accident Thursday to determine what had caused Troy to swerve his vehicle, according to Mitchell. Alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash.

Troy was not wearing a seat belt, Mitchell said.

Chapman Ridge Road connects to Route 43 in Cornville and runs parallel to Route 151 through Athens.
