JAY — The Select Board voted Monday to accept a $3,304 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant to upgrade the Police Department’s handguns.
Chief Richard Caton IV received the trade-in value of the current handguns, and officers interested in buying their old service guns will be able to do so. The money will go toward the upgrade costs.
In other business, a temporary bridge on Hutchinson Road is expected to be installed Tuesday.
Residents voted Monday at a special Town Meeting to authorize the Select Board to enter into temporary construction easements for the installation over Ridley Brook and to repair and/or reconstruct the road damaged during the June 29 rainstorm and flash flooding.
Following the vote, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said the town’s attorney is working to complete language for the easements to assure that the liability remains with the town, not the property owners.
Material for the temporary bridge has been delivered. The crew will work through the night Tuesday to complete the installation as quickly as possible.
A plan has been developed for fire protection for the area, she said.
LaFreniere said Pike Industries Inc. has completed paving all areas related to the May and June storms, except Begin, Macomber and Hutchinson roads, which will be done as part of the permanent repairs next summer.
In another matter, because Christmas Day is on a Monday, the board will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at the Town Office.
