Shirley A. Lapointe

SKOWHEGAN – Shirley A. Lapointe passed away peacefully on Nov 29, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Born on Dec. 30, 1936, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Ruth (Stoodley) Hodgdon of Skowhegan.

She graduated from Skowhegan High School Class of 1954 and married Francis A. Lapointe in 1955. They shared 67 years of marriage and had three children, Mark, Susan and Kenneth. Her greatest pride were her children, their spouses and her grandsons. After the death of her beloved father in 1991, Francis and Shirley devoted their lives to her mother Ruth until her passing in 2009.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband Francis in 2022, her parents Charles and Ruth Hodgdon, her sister Vivian Salimone, sisters-in-law Anita Lancaster, Rita Spencer, Leona Lapointe and Ruth Lapointe, and brother-in-law Robert Lapointe.

Shirley is survived by her son Mark and his wife Dotty (Windsor), daughter Susan Hanson and husband Roger (Winthrop) and son Kenneth and wife Linda (Peoria, Ariz.); her sister Charlene Hyde and her husband Robert; grandsons Derek and his wife Leigh-Ann, Nathan and his wife Sara, Joseph Lockett and Jared Hanson; and great grandchildren Nicolas, Nevaeh, Sheila and Hunter. Shirley is also survived by her dear friend and sister-in-law Geraldine Lapointe, her dear friend and classmate Diane Crowley, her friend Germaine Goulette, her brothers- and sisters-in-law; Paul and Phyliss Lapointe, Arthur Lapointe and George Lapointe; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was loved by her Aunt Grace and Uncle Arnold Lyons who “adopted” her after her mother’s passing.

Shirley loved gardening. Her flowers were displayed at the Skowhegan fair for over 25 years, winning many 1st place ribbons. She loved line dancing and fondly remembered being part of a group that danced on a flatbed truck in a parade. She and Francis enjoyed many years boating, fishing and visiting the coast. From 1980-1996, she and Francis owned and operated Lapointe’s Accounting and Income Tax in Madison, Me.

The family is thankful to Maine General Home and Hospice, especially her nurse Frannie and to Sherry Bacon for their loving care. There will be a private graveside service at the Veterans Cemetery, Augusta, Maine. Arrangements are by Direct Cremation of Maine.
