Raymond E. Poulin

AUGUSTA – Raymond E. Poulin, 87, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023 after battling a yearlong stroke related illness. He was born in Augusta on March 9, 1936, the son of Lucien E. “Bobby” and Merilda (Pare) Poulin, and was the second oldest of 14 children (two of whom were stillbirths.)

Raymond was a lifelong communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church where as a child he served as an altar boy and later as a collector. He attended St. Augustine School and Cony High School, then accepted his calling to enter the work force to help support his large family. He was employed at Kirshner‘s Meat Market followed by Jordan’s Meat Plant in his early work life. Skills learned in this industry would remain with him for life. His passion for carving his “Sunday family dinner roasts” in harmony with his Mario Lanza records playing in the background was contagious! The Sunday morning ritual of Mass, music and meat carving brought joyful times to the Poulin home. He also loved helping friends process their deer meat for many years. Raymond then moved on to the bread business taking a job with the J.J. Nissen Baking Co. as a bread salesman servicing the greater Gardiner area until his retirement in 1997. In 1971, he received the J.J. Nissen Salesman of the Year Award.

Raymond married his childhood sweetheart, Lucille C. (Castonguay) Poulin on Sept. 3, 1956. They were blessed with three children, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one more on the way. Ray absolutely loved the kids and spent many years following all of them in their various school and sports related activities. He was their number one fan and a wonderful Pepere!

Ray was an avid golfer holding memberships at Western View, Natanis and the Augusta Country Club at different times in his life. He enjoyed being out on the golf course communing with family, friends and nature and occasionally delighted reminiscing of his five career holes-in-one. Ray was a good baseball player in his youth as well as a long-standing Red Sox fan. He enjoyed fishing and billiards and loved playing card games especially cribbage. Raymond was a lifelong member of Le Club Calumet, the Elks Club, and the Cushnoc Senior Citizens Club. In his later years, he enjoyed taking many trips with his wife, Lucille and their dear friends.

Raymond was predeceased by his parents, Lucien and Merilda (Pare) Poulin; four brothers, Richard, Rene, Roland and Jean-Paul Poulin, and two sisters, Muriel and Pauline Poulin.

Mr. Poulin is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lucille C. (Castonguay) Poulin of Augusta; three children, daughter, Donna Emery and her husband, Robert “Bob” of Winthrop, son, Norman Poulin and his wife, Jeanne of Augusta, daughter, Lisa Brochu and her husband, Paul “Al” of Augusta; three granddaughters, Nicole Hasenfus and husband, Tavis of Readfield, Alyssa Spillane and husband, Sean of Chelsea, Arika Spencer and husband, Ben of Winthrop; three grandsons, Michael Poulin and wife, Whitney of Gray, Andrew Emery and wife, Dani of Chelsea, Mass., and Nicholas, of Orono; four great-grandchildren, Gavia, Griffin and Grafton Hasenfus of Readfield, Masyn Spillane of Chelsea, and one more great-grandbaby on the way, Baby boy Spencer; two brothers, Gerard Poulin and wife, Debbie of Augusta, and Alphonse Poulin of Rome, three sisters, Lucille Bolduc and husband Donald of Augusta, Noella Poulin of Augusta, and Jeanne Clements of Belgrade; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
