William Benjamin Leet

AUGUSTA – William Benjamin Leet, 65, of Augusta, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023 at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. He died peacefully, surrounded by family, while some of his favorite music played.

Bill was born in Augusta on August 22, 1958, the son of the late John “Jack” Leet and Mary “Molly” (Fallon) Leet. He grew up in the Mayfair neighborhood, going on adventures (and occasionally causing trouble) with his siblings and kids who lived nearby. His childhood summers were spent with family and cousins, enjoying time at the Fallon, Cameron, and Leet compound on Cobbossee Lake. Bill’s primary interest, though, was sports. He was a natural athlete and developed a love for sports at an early age. His team making it to the 1971 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. was a highlight for Bill. He looked back on his time as a wayward kid and the memories he garnered with fondness.

Bill graduated from Cony High School and later obtained a Bachelors Degree in Business from the University of Maine. He went on to enjoy a long tenure working for the State of Maine, beginning in the Department of Transportation and ending his career as the Director of the Division of Leased Space.

Though Bill found satisfaction in his professional life, he dedicated himself to his family and being a dad was the job he cherished. In 1990, he married his wife, Stephanie, and together they raised two kids, Heather and Benjamin. Countless hours of his were spent attending a variety of sporting events, dance recitals, concerts, etc. As a devoted dad, he rarely missed a an opportunity to support his kids and show he was proud of them.

Bill enjoyed working on projects and spending time at the camp he purchased for his family, on Lower Narrows Pond, golfing–over the years, having memberships at the Kennebec Heights Country Club, Western View Golf Club, and the Augusta Country Club–and getting together frequently with a tight-knit group of lifelong friends.

He was predeceased by his father, John B. Leet, his mother, Mary F. (Fallon) Leet; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Haskell. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Stephanie (Haskell) Leet of Augusta; his daughter, Heather M. Leet of Augusta, his son, Benjamin M. Leet of Scarborough; his brother, J. Timothy Leet and wife Linda of Farmingdale, his sister, Patricia Leet of Saco; his sister-in-law, Deborah (Haskell) MacKenzie and her husband Chris of West Gardiner, his brother-in-law, Edward Haskell Jr. of Augusta; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Dec. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Governor Hill Mansion, 136 State St., Augusta.
