Margaret Ann Dunn

AUGUSTA – Margaret A. Dunn, “Margie”, 74, died after a long illness on Dec. 15, 2023, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. She was born Sept. 17, 1949, in Bangor, the oldest child of Leo F., and Eileen (Johnson) Dunn.

Margaret graduated from John Bapst High School in Bangor, class of 1968. Upon graduation Margaret attended the University of Maine, and ultimately received a degree from the University. In addition to attending college, she had a varied career in social services in different capacities with the State of Maine, and most recently as a drug and alcohol counselor at the Maine State Prison.

As the oldest child of a large Irish Catholic family, Margie was always The Boss. She was very adept at making sure everything went off according to plan and she had no problem letting everyone know she was in charge. Everything she did, however, came from a place of love. She cared deeply about family and worked hard to make sure things went as smoothly as possible, and that family dynamics didn’t go off the rails-not an easy task with the unruly clan she was blessed (burdened!) with. And if there are factual errors in this obituary, it is because we don’t have her to call anymore to verify family facts.

She was predeceased by her father Leo F. Dunn Jr., her mother Eileen J. Dunn, and her brother Daniel F Dunn.

Margaret is survived by her husband Robert (Bobby) Baird of South China. Margaret and Bobby married in 1993 and had many quality years of travel, family events and good-natured bickering! They had a great run together and truly loved each other. Surviving in addition to Bobby, are siblings Mary Dunn and her husband Peter Shotwell of Cooper, and their daughter Willow and her children, Bowie and Rin, and daughter Una; Timothy Dunn of New Portland and his children, Ryan and Alissa; Stephen Dunn and his partner Jessica Barone of Zephyrhills Fla.; Eileen Dunn of Ellsworth and her children, Michelle Mectaux, and Seamus; Michael Dunn and his wife Sharon of Bangor, and their children, Heather Dunn Levesque and Kirk Levesque, and children Molly and Owen, Casey Dunn and husband Tim Bissell, and their children Nora and Phoebe, Kathleen Dunn of Bar Harbor and Liam Dunn of Bangor; David Dunn of Bangor and his wife Laurie, and daughter Hannah; and Kathleen Honey and husband Denny Honey of Eddington and daughter Abby, and her son Amari, and son David and his children Rex, Aspyn, Henry, and Roman.

Margaret nurtured her own siblings, but she also had a large group of friends from her childhood and school days, too many to mention here. In addition, Margaret’s closest friend in life, Peggy Baird is due a special recognition. Peggy is someone she knew from her earliest days, and one who became a dear friend, confidante, sister-in law, and true guardian angel as her health deteriorated.

Margaret will be missed by many.

A special Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring with details to be announced at a later date.

Those who wish to honor Margaret in a special way could make gifts to the Alfond Cancer Center in Augusta and mail to: MaineGeneral Health, Office of Philanthropy, PO Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903.
