CHINA — A Winslow woman was killed early Wednesday evening when the SUV she was driving went off Maple Ridge Road and struck a tree.

Faith Pomerleau, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release Thursday from Lt. J. Chris Read of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Read said in the release that at about 4:04 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to Maple Ridge Road for a report of a crash. A caller saw a blue 2004 Jeep Cherokee go off the road and hit a tree.

Firefighters from Winslow, China and Vassalboro arrived at the scene and worked to extricate a passenger in the vehicle, Morgan Lacombe, 20, of Winslow, he said. She was taken by Delta Ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta and then flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious injuries, according to Read.

“Preliminary investigation has shown that speed and alcohol were factors in this crash,” his release says. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families involved.”
