Michael P. Fleming

WALPOLE, Mass. – Michael P. Fleming, 65, of Walpole, Massachusetts died at home on Jan. 7, 2024.

Mike was born on June 30, 1958, in Rock Island, Illinois. He was the oldest of William and Alice (Malloy) Fleming’s six sons. Mike grew up in Auburn and Hampden. After graduating from Hampden Academy in 1976, he attended the Coast Guard Academy for two years. He met Patricia Donovan at his brother Steve’s birthday party in 1977 and he married her in 1980. They raised their children together in Winslow. Mike earned his B.S. from Thomas College in 1994 while working fulltime as a letter carrier. After thirty years of delivering mail, he retired from the Waterville Post Office in 2016. He and Patty moved to Massachusetts after retirement to be near their children and grandchildren.

Mike had a strong work ethic, a dry sense of humor, and a passion for reading everything the public library had to offer. He was an animal magnet, perhaps because of his gentle demeanor, perhaps because he insisted on sharing his food. Mike enjoyed playing sports and games, from basketball to wiffle ball to board games. Some of his happiest times were at his grandparents’ and mother’s home in Turner, joking and playing with family. In recent years, he loved being a Grampa to his grandchildren.

Mike is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia, his daughter Samantha, and his granddaughter Emma of Walpole, Massachusetts; his son Ryan, daughter-in-law Christine, and grandchildren, Kalman and Ilona of Villa Park, California; his mother Alice of Winslow; his brothers, Stephen (Allen) of Roslindale, Massachusetts, John (Kandice) of Waterville, Brian (Gretchen) of Bangor, and David (Sally) of Bangor; his sisters-in-law Norleen Fleming of Winslow, Kathleen (Stephen) Bergeron of Bethel, and Mary (Peter) Hajjar of Hanover, Massachusetts; his brother-in-law Kevin (Mary) Donovan of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. Mike was pre-deceased by his father William and his brother Patrick.

Visitation will be Friday, January 12, at 12:30 p.m., at Alexander Thomas and Sons Funeral Home in Walpole. Interment will follow at Terrace Hill Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Old Colony Hospice for their care and compassion in Mike’s final days.

Memorials or donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Old Colony Hospice
