Marjorie E. Cooper

WINTHROP – Marjorie E. Cooper, 100, died Jan. 1, 2024, at Heritage Rehabilitation & Living Center in Winthrop.

She was born in Winthrop on Sept. 25, 1923, the daughter of Charles and Martha (Moos) Mills.

Marjorie grew up with her parents and sister on their farm on the Stanley Road in Winthrop. Marge graduated from Gates Business School and took her first job at the Charles E. Downing Insurance Co., both in Augusta. She married Maynard W. Cooper in 1945, raised three children at their home on the Annabessacook Road, and worked as a legal secretary for a local attorney in Winthrop.

Marge’s family spent weekends at their camp on an island on Maranacook Lake until 1965 when they purchased a cottage on the mainland, eventually moving permanently to that location. Marge especially enjoyed activities with friends and family such as boating and snowmobiling. She completed her working career with the State of Maine Department of Transportation in 1986.

Following retirement Marge and her husband took a car trip around the United States, stopping to visit their daughter in Western Montana. They also spent winters at their 2nd home in Spring Hill, Florida, enjoying their many new friends. After a marriage of 57 years and her husband’s death in 2002, Marge embarked on an adventure to Alaska with her daughter; she also made additional visits to Montana.

In Marge’s later years she settled into her favorite spot, the cottage on Maranacook Lake. She enjoyed life on the Lake with simple joys such as warming by the kitchen wood cookstove, relaxing on the cottage deck, and watching the loons on the lake and the eagles over the cove.

Marge was predeceased by her parents, Martha Moos Mills and Charles Frederick Mills, husband Maynard Woodbury Cooper from Winthrop, sister Marian Mills Esancy, nephew Micheal Esancy, and eldest son David Peter Cooper who died in 2018.

She is survived by her daughter Janis Marian Cooper, residing in Hamilton, Montana, and son Eric Charles Cooper, residing at the Maranacook cottage as his mother’s primary caretaker until three weeks prior to her death, and her granddaughter Jessie Cooper, David’s daughter, residing in Portland, Maine.

A graveside service with family and close friends will be held in the spring at Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane, Winthrop.
