WEST GARDINER — Christy Hemenway, the owner and founder of Run Amok Mead, has been elected as the new president of the Maine Winery Guild, a nonprofit organization that promotes and supports the Maine wine, cider and spirits industry.
Hemenway, who started Run Amok Mead in 2022, is a passionate advocate for all craft beverages – though perhaps particularly fond of mead, a fermented beverage made from honey and water. She produces a variety of meads using local honey and fruits, and offers tastings and tours at her FairWeather tasting barn in West Gardiner. She also participates in various events and brew festivals across the state, showcasing her award-winning meads and educating the public about the history and culture of mead-making, according to a news release from Run Amok Mead.
“I am honored and excited to serve as the president of the Maine Winery Guild,” Hemenway said. “Maine has a rich and vibrant craft beverage culture, and I look forward to working with my fellow producers and partners to grow and celebrate our industry. I believe that Maine has something unique and special to offer to the world of wine, cider and spirits, and I want to share that with everyone.”
The Maine Winery Guild was established in 2008 to advance the prosperity of the Maine wine, cider and spirits industries, the farms that support them, and the community they serve. The guild organizes the Maine Wine Trail, a self-guided tour of the state’s wineries, cideries and distilleries, and hosts the annual Maine Open Winery Day, a statewide event that invites visitors to explore and enjoy the local craft beverage scene. The guild also provides resources and advocacy for its members and the industry at large.
