NORRIDGEWOCK – Larry H. Johnson, 89, of Norridgewock, passed away peacefully at his home on Jan. 15, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Dec. 14, 1934, in Unity, N.H., to the late Harry R. Johnson and Eleanor (Wood) Johnson. At the age of 7, Larry’s family relocated to Maine, first to Albion and then to Fairfield.

Larry’s commitment to serving his country began at the age of 17 when he joined the U.S. Navy Reserves. Shortly after, he enlisted in the Navy full-time. In 1958, he also joined the U.S. Air Force, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to protecting and serving his country.

On March 19, 1960, Larry married the love of his life, Maxine E. Williams. Together, they raised three children, Dale, Laurie, and Craig, who brought immense joy and pride to their lives.

Larry’s passion for law enforcement became evident in 1956 when he became a Fairfield police officer, working alongside his oldest brother, Richard. This marked the beginning of a remarkable and enduring career in law enforcement. During this time, Larry also occasionally drove an oil truck for Clauson’s Oil Company.

In 1960, Larry joined the Hampden Police Department, working under the leadership of his brother, Chief Richard Johnson. Three years later, he became a police officer for the town of Thomaston, once again serving under his brother’s guidance. While residing in Thomaston, Larry also took on additional responsibilities, such as driving a school bus for the local schools and performing scuba diving to repair boats.

In 1964, Larry assumed the role of Chief of Police for the town of Mattawamkeag. Two years later, he and Maxine relocated their family to Oakland, where Larry became the Chief of Police. During his tenure in Oakland, Larry also served as a sworn Kennebec County Deputy Sheriff, providing police services to Belgrade, Belgrade Lakes, Rome, and Sidney. Additionally, he occasionally served as the Chief of Police for the town of Winslow. Larry worked closely with various agencies in the Oakland area and the Maine State Police, fostering strong relationships and ensuring the safety of the community.

In 1976, Larry retired from full-time law enforcement with the Oakland Police Department and transitioned to a security officer role with Scott Paper Company Security Police in Winslow. His dedication and exemplary work ethic led to a swift promotion to the rank of Sergeant. Larry continued to serve as a sworn officer with the Winslow Police Department until his retirement in 1992.

In 1988, Larry and Maxine relocated to Norridgewock and became proud members of the Norridgewock Baptist Church. Larry’s faith played a significant role in his life, and he was baptized in the church. In 1995, he joined the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff. In 1999, Larry requested and was granted a transfer to Court Security, where he served until his full retirement in September 2007.

Larry’s exceptional contributions to law enforcement were recognized in 2017 when he became the first recipient of the Town of Oakland’s highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award. This accolade was a testament to his integrity, dedication, and outstanding service to the community.

Larry will be lovingly remembered for his honesty, infectious smile, contagious laughter, modesty, compassion, and positive outlook on life. He will forever be cherished for his unwavering commitment as a law enforcement officer, often going above and beyond the call of duty. Above all, Larry will be deeply missed as a devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend. Many still referred to him as “Chief Johnson”, a testament to the respect and admiration he garnered throughout his career.

Larry was predeceased by his parents; brothers Richard and Francis (Bunny), sister Margaret (Peggy) Johnson Foster; his daughter Laurie Johnson; and his best friend Howard Swett. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Maxine; his two sons Dale Johnson of Norridgewock and Craig Johnson of Winslow; sister-in-law Linda Alderson of Waterville; granddaughter Kelli Johnson of Winslow; numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandsons; and the Swett family of Oakland, as well as Richard and Joanne Arnold of Belgrade Lakes and Florida.

There is no doubt that Chief Larry H. Johnson is now patrolling the golden streets of heaven alongside his best friend, Sgt. Howard W. Swett (Retired Oakland Police Department), ensuring eternal peace and safety.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Kingdom Life Church, located at 191 High Street, Oakland, Maine.
