Lois Marie (Williams) Flenner

HOT SPRINGS, Va. – Lois Marie (Williams) Flenner, 69, of Hot Springs, Va., peacefully passed away on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024, at the Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs, Va. Born on April 6, 1954, in Hartland, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Edwin Williams and Lois Gwendolyn Webber.

Ms. Flenner graduated from Winthrop High School, Winthrop in 1972 and she received an associate’s degree from Mid-State College in 1992. She dedicated over 20 years of her life to serving as a Recorder in Medical Records at the then Kennebec Valley Medical Center. Known for her quiet demeanor with a quick wit, she had the ability to deliver a perfect one-liner at just the right moment. Lois had a profound love for dogs, particularly Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos whom she adored and allowed to freely roam her home. In return, Lois was showered with love and affectionate kisses.

Her passion for pizza was unmatched, and she enjoyed indulging in a good game of Candy Crush. Lois cherished her conversations with her sister, Norma, often speaking multiple times a day. She had a deep love for her children and took joy in independently hitting the road for hours to visit them, eagerly assisting in setting up new homes and delighting in the company of her grandchildren.

Lois found joy in reading, solving crossword puzzles, and reconnecting with high school friends, even taking the lead in organizing her last high school class reunion. She approached disagreements with a comical touch, ensuring not to hurt anyone’s feelings while still understanding their perspective. She was fair, kind, generous, and an exceptional listener, never passing judgment and always giving the benefit of the doubt.

A fighter until the end, Lois faced challenges with humor and rarely revealed her pain or fears to her children. Her cooking, though not fancy, always carried a purpose of comfort and homemade warmth. In her final moments, she expressed her enduring love and pride in her children as her last spoken words.

As a loving mother and grandmother, affectionately known as “Banana” to her granddaughters, Lois enjoyed the mountains and the abundant wildlife in her backyard at Mountain Crest near the high school in Hot Springs, Va. Grateful for the kindness of neighbors and the community during her battle, Jason and Jennifer extend their heartfelt appreciation.

Survived by her two children, Jason Michael Pongonis and wife Rhonda of Waynesboro, Pa., and Jennifer Marie Pongonis with her fur baby Ahsoka (whom Lois always inquired about) of Bunnell, Fla. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Apple, Layla, Claire, and Ashley; as well as a great-grandchild, Evelyn. Lois leaves behind four brothers, Clyde Williams (Catherine), Alan Williams (Donna), Joel Williams and Daniel Williams (Angelique) and six sisters, Cynthia Pelliccia (Noel), Barbara Hoehn (Kevin), Patricia Flewelling (William), Margaret Williams (Terrance Knowles), Beverly Olson (Paul), and Norma Williams; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Martha; nephews Luke, Jack and Troy and nieces Wendy and Jasmine; her parents; grandparents; and a special aunt.

A memorial service honoring Lois’s life is planned in Maine for Friday, June 28, at the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon with a gathering afterward at the Mount Vernon Community Center.
