WATERVILLE — One person was killed in a shooting Monday morning outside a house in Waterville, officials said.

Police responded shortly after 8 a.m. to a report of a shooting outside the home at 18 S. Grove St., according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

A second person was targeted by gunfire but not injured, Moss said.

Earlier information released by police indicated another person had been injured in the shooting.

The person who died was taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy is expected Tuesday, according to Moss.

The Maine State Police said there was no danger to the public in the aftermath of the shooting.

As of Monday afternoon, police had not identified the shooting victim or others involved in the shooting.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit was assisting the Waterville Police Department in investigating the incident, according to Moss.

Reached on Monday morning, Maj. Jason Longley of the Waterville Police Department deferred all questions to Moss.

Shortly after noon Monday, police officers from several departments were at the house on South Grove Street, which officers had cordoned off with police tape.

Later in the afternoon, police had left the area after reopening the street.
