GARDINER — Cub Scouts in Pack 672 explored electronics during a recent meeting. They learned by doing — taking apart old computers, copiers, printers, videotape machines, and other devices in order to see what makes them tick.

Residents of Gardiner and Pittston donated their broken or outdated electronics to the pack for the youths to explore the internal operations of these various devices, according to a news release from Chuck Mahaleris, district chairman for the Kennebec Valley District of Scouting.

“The Scouts, siblings and even parents had a great time exploring the electronics,” said Cubmaster Scott St. Amand. “There was even a scavenger hunt to help identify some small components.”

St. Amand hopes that this innovative program will encourage the Cubs to work on the Nova Awards programs of Scouting, which incorporate learning with activities and exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics for Cub Scouts.

The equipment will be donated after metal has been scrapped. The event took place Feb. 22 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Gardiner.
