The CEO of Kellogg helpfully suggests Americans eat cereal if we can’t afford food prices. I’ve nothing against cereal at any time of day, but what’s he eating? I doubt cereal is on the menu for him.

The giant foreign corporations which own our supermarket chains are enjoying record-breaking profits and passing those profits on to their shareholders, not the paying customer, using inflation as a cover. Apparently, their CEOs believe that we, the cereal-eating public, are not smart enough to realize that corporate greed accounts for more than half the rate of inflation. Billions in profits are not enough for these corporations; they are also using “shrink flation” to ensure even higher prices at the register. Product sizes are getting smaller.

Walmart recently raised the price of its Great Value brand, resulting in huge profits for the last quarter. All while paying its workers so little that they qualify for billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies for health care and SNAP benefits.

How many different ways can we be forced to bear these costs? I’m sure they’ll think of something. Corporate tax rates are at record lows, but that’s a topic for another day.
