Burl Ewell

WEST GARDINER – Burl Ewell, a proud U.S. Navy Veteran, passed away on Feb. 28, 2024, at the age of 74.

The son of Paul and Lenore Ewell, Burl grew up in Rochester, Ohio. He was a 1967 graduate of New London High School in Ohio and later received a degree in Marine Engineering from Southern Maine Technical College.

Upon graduation, Burl enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served 26 years as active duty including time during the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. He returned to government service working at SUPSHIP in Bath, before officially retiring in 2016.

Burl enjoyed spending his free time with family, gardening, traveling, restoring antique tractors and volunteering for the Maine Antique Tractor Club and Litchfield Fair Grounds.

Burl is survived by his sister, Bonnie Babet and her husband Ken, his brother, Bruce and his wife Mim; his daughter, Cherish MacDonald and her husband Dave, his daughter, Andrea Bernier and her husband Kris; and his former wife, Jeanne (Giguere), with whom he remained friends. He was the loving grandfather of Kendall Cushing and her husband Ryan, Cody Beebe, Hunter Beebe and his girlfriend Cami Doody, Gabby MacDonald, Ashlyn Beebe and her fiancé Daniel Gammons and Marin MacDonald. Burl was a loving great-grandfather of Ryan Cushing II and Waylon Gammons.

Along with his parents, Burl was preceded in death by his sister, Beth Parker and brothers Bernard “Bernie” Ewell and Brent Ewell.

Burl will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.

A celebration of life with family and friends will be scheduled for the spring.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a memorial contribution in Burl’s name to the Maine Antique Tractor Club or the Litchfield Fair.
