Peter James Murray

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Peter James Murray, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully at his home in Laguna Niguel, Calif., on Feb. 27, 2024, at the age of 71, with his family by his side.

Peter was born April 17, 1952, in Augusta, to Mildred Blouin Murray and James Anderson Murray. His journey through life was marked by many lasting friendships, close family ties, good music, and joy for the simple pleasures in life.

After graduating from Cony High School in 1971, Peter moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. He completed his education at the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. He then headed west to find his California dream, landing in Newport Beach and eventually settling in Laguna Niguel, where he resided for 35 years.

He spent over 40 years building a successful career in technology sales. After many years working in the corporate world, he continued with his own business in the same field.

Upon retiring, Peter wanted to do something meaningful for others. He spent time working for Seniors Helping Seniors, providing companionship and support to those in need.

A strong, kind, and very independent man, Peter always enjoyed interesting conversation and meeting new people. Whether walking in Dana Point Harbor, watching a beautiful California sunset or hanging out at his favorite local restaurant listening to music. He was always striking up conversations with someone, possibly about his favorite baseball team, the Dodgers.

Peter welcomed all the family to his home in California, never forgetting his roots in Maine with frequent visits. He found great joy having his niece Lauren, her husband Scott and their daughter Clara close by in Mission Viejo giving him many happy hours spent with family.

His greatest passion began in high school, playing hours of music with his friends. They created their own band, The Guill-O-Teens, playing gigs all around Augusta. Peter was a drummer in the band and continued playing drums all his life but later discovered he loved playing the guitar as well. He appreciated music of all genres, playing it, talking about it, attending concerts and local live music.

Peter was also an avid tennis enthusiast. He was a very good player, even playing while undergoing his cancer treatments. He attended the Indian Wells Open tennis tournament every year and watched hours of tennis throughout his life, up until the very end.

A history buff, Peter researched his ancestry, reaching out to cousins near and far on our Mother’s side of the family, resulting in a reunion in Maine on Cobbossee Lake 2021. It was a wonderful time reminiscing about growing up on the lake and making new memories. He also organized a reunion of his high school friends as recently as last summer on the lake, a place he loved. Both were great days full of memories and friendships.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, Mildred and James Murray, brothers, James Byard Murray, and Dennis Anderson Murray.

He is survived by his sisters, Patricia Murray-Maines of Augusta, Suzanne Albison, husband Stephen of Manchester, Deborah Remley, husband James, of Winthrop, and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of life for Peter will take place this summer with family and friends.

In lieu of flowers please consider a random act of kindness in Peter’s memory.
