Richard “Dicky” J. Byron

MADISON – Richard “Dicky” J. Byron, 73, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024, surrounded by his family in Madison.

Dicky was born on Jan. 3, 1951, in Haverhill, Mass., son to Lillian (Alley) and Leo Byron, spending the last 33 years in Madison. He was a Vietnam Veteran proudly serving in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971.

Dicky was a valued employee at every business he worked for. His many talents were always appreciated. Once leaving the service he worked for Channel’s Builders. He built Joseph’s Bakery, then became the maintenance person and at Phil Baril Auto, he was a mechanic. Once moving to Maine, he started at Campbell Building Supply where he worked until retirement.

Dicky was always busy and loved working with his hands, known capable to build or fix anything. He was everyone’s handyman and helped anyone who asked. Dicky had several hobbies including but not limited to hunting, fishing, golfing, dancing, and playing cards. He enjoyed the years he was able to be a snowbird and travel to Florida for the winters.

His one true love was racing. The Byron line of racing goes back a long way, four generations in all. Before he could even drive, he sold ice cream at Pines Speedway. Once getting his own car he raced at multiple tracks including Hudson, Star, Lee, and Wiscasset. There, he built friendships that would last a lifetime. When his oldest son, Rich, began racing he helped him assemble his first car. Years later he put together a car for his son, Albert, to run. He even built a race trailer for his grandson, Jacob, and spent time in Delaware helping with his car. In the past few years, he saw many local races with his “grandson” Alex. Racing was always a family affair for him.

He was predeceased by both his parents; and siblings Leo Byron, Phillip Byron, Laura Byron, and Linda Byron.

Dickey is survived by his partner of 33 years, Linda Kelley; children Richard (Georgia) Byron, Albert (Victoria) Byron, Candace (Craig) Davis, Michael (Shelley) Corson; grandchildren Alexandra (Jared) DelCollo, TJ (Mandy) DelCollo, Dylan (Larrisa) Byron, Jacob Byron, and Alex (Charlee) Corson; great-granddaughter Rory DelCollo; siblings Lenny Byron and Lisa Byron; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

There will be Celebrations of Life at a later date in both Madison and Haverhill, Mass.
