We’ve reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA basketball tournaments, and three former high school stars from Maine are playing for teams seeking berths in the Final Four.

All three will play in regional semifinal games on Friday. Should their teams win those games, they would advance to the Elite Eight for games on Sunday.

FRIDAY

Cumberland’s Anna DeWolfe, a fifth-year senior, is playing in the NCAA women’s tournament for the first time as a starting guard for Notre Dame. She scored 12 points as the Irish defeated Kent State, 81-67, in the first round and had nine points in a 71-56 win over Mississippi in the second round on Monday. DeWolfe scored 12 points Friday, but the Fighting Irish were eliminated with a 70-65 loss to Oregon Sate.

Mackenzie Holmes of Gorham, also a fifth-year senior, is the all-time leading scorer for the Indiana women’s basketball program. She scored 29 points as the Hoosiers rallied to beat Oklahoma, 75-68, on Monday to advance to the Sweet 16. In the first round, Holmes scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds in an 89-56 win over Fairfield. Holmes scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds as the Hoosiers were eliminated with a 79-75 loss to No. 1 seed South Carolina on Friday.

Former South Portland High star J.P. Estrella is a freshman on the University of Tennessee men’s team. He saw only one minute of action as the Vols defeated Texas 62-58 to reach the Sweet 16 for the second straight year. In the first round, Estrella came off the bench to score six points in an 83-49 win over St. Peter’s.
