AUGUSTA – Charles Nelson Wilcox Jr., 84, died peacefully with loving family at his side, Friday, March 15, 2024, at Togus Springs VA Hospital in Augusta.

He was born March 8, 1940, in Old Lyme, Connecticut, to Charles Nelson Wilcox Sr. and Mary H. (Miner) Wilcox. He attended schools in Plainfield, Conn. Charles served in the Air Force from 1957-1961, including being stationed in Thule, Greenland. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion.

He was a self-employed business owner in many facets of construction, renovation, restoration and woodworking in Connecticut and Maine.

Charles had a lifelong hobby of restoring Jeeps, especially Willys, and enjoyed time spent with his friend Rick Poland. He was an avid traveler, always hauling or driving a camper along the East Coast as well as Texas and Canada.

He loved time spent with family, especially his grandchildren. Teaching them how to ride a bike, whistle and watch old movies together were a shared joy. Throughout his life Charles was an active church member, serving as deacon, trustee and other roles in several churches. In 2021 his book “Listening to God” was published about his journey with his faith.

Charles was predeceased by his parents, his brother Albert Wilcox and his wife Ann, his sister Joyce Gluck and her husband John, his sister Carol Leggett and several nieces and nephews as well as his in-laws, George and Evelyn Sagar.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Sagar) Wilcox and their children, Susan Dodge and her husband Toby, Peter C. Wilcox and Sarah W. Minzy and her husband Scott. His much loved grandchildren, Sarah Boivin, Jude` Strong, Parker, Thomas and Aaron Minzy. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Louise Maze and Betty Hopkins and her husband Byron, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Charles will be missed by many special friends in Florida, Connecticut and Maine including his “Lunch Bunch” group and his kitty cat Cotton Socks.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Faith Christian Church, 280 Brunswick Ave. in Gardiner, Maine on April 7 at 1:30 p.m.

The family would like to thank the VA staff at Togus Springs in Maine and the VA staff in West Roxbury, Massachusetts for their wonderful care.
