F. Wayne Libby

HARTLAND – F. Wayne Libby, 91, died on March 25, 2024, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born on Nov. 3, 1932, in Hartland, to Fred and Edythe (Philbrick) Libby.

He attended Hartland schools, graduating from Hartland Academy in 1951. He received his B.A. from U.M.O. in 1955 where he lettered in cross country skiing and was a member of R.O.T.C.

He proudly served in the United States Army from 1955 – 1957 and received a B.A. degree in Foreign Trade from Thunderbird School in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1958. He then returned to Hartland and taught grades 6 and 7 at the Ell Hill School in Palmyra for a year. He started teaching U.S. History at Hartland Academy in 1959 and continued until S.A.D. 48 was formed. He then continued to teach at Nokomis Regional High and also coached skiing, girls track, and cross country, until his retirement in 1996.

Wayne was active with the U.S. Army Reserves starting as a Company Commander of the 946 Transportation Company in Dexter and retired as a Colonel after 25 years of service as Commander of the 76 Division Unit located in Lewiston.

He was member of the Grace Linn Memorial United Methodist Church in Hartland, a board member of Scott Webb Medical Center, a chairman of the board of trustees of the Hartland Public Library, President of the Hartland Historical Society, a member of the Hartland-St. Albans Lions Club, a member of the Corinthian Lodge #95 A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Evening Star Chapter #189.

Wayne especially enjoyed remodeling the homestead where he was born and the camp on Big Indian Lake. He enjoyed carpentry, gardening, reading, his many family pets, and family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife Helene (Loomis) Libby, whom he married in 1959; two sons, Jeff of Hartland and Jason and wife Alicia of St. Albans; special grandchildren, Angela Leavitt and husband Matt, Derek Hafenecker, Jake Hafenecker and wife Renee, and Nick Reeves and companion Sara; and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Edythe Libby.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 152, in Hartland, with military honors being presented for his service to our country.
