Walter Z. Charczenko

AUGUSTA – Walter Z. Charczenko passed away peacefully at the Maine Veterans Home, Augusta on March 13, 2024 at the age of 89.

He was born in Sumy, Ukraine to Zachar and Zina Charczenko. He and his family immigrated to the United States after WWII. Walter was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage.

Walter joined the US Army and was part of the 82nd Airborne. He was stationed in Germany, and there is where he met up with his future wife Helen. He built his home in Chelsea, where he and Helen raised their children together. He owned Charczenko Construction Inc., and he was a past president of the Gardiner Lions Club, secretary of the Maine Home Builders Association, the former constable for the town of Chelsea as well as a former selectman. Walter also took part in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2018.

Walter was predeceased by his wife Helen; father Zachar; son Michael; sister Nina, and brothers John, Joseph, and Paul.

He is survived by his children, son Peter Charczenko, daughter Gloria Hinerman and spouse Darrel, daughter Carolyn Tobias and spouse Michael, daughter Nina; grandchildren Jacqueline, Joseph, and Hannah; great grandson Riley; sister Polina McDonnell, brother Jacob Charczenko; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the Maine Veterans Home and Beacon Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion they all provided.

A private memorial will be held in the spring.
