I was disappointed to see Travis Mills’ article “Veterans right to choose care must be carefully protected,” which expressed his opposition to L.D. 2259 “An Act to Prohibit Receiving Compensation for Assisting a Person to Obtain Veterans’ Benefits Except as Permitted Under Federal Law.”

First, the proposed act does not limit veterans’ right to choose care. L.D. 2259 would provide additional protection for veterans who increasingly have become targets of scammers. These claim sharks seek payment, sometimes in the form of a percentage of the veterans’ compensation for help with filing for benefits.

To all of my fellow veterans, if anyone offers to file a claim with the VA for you for a fee, report this activity to the VA at: va.gov/oig/hotline or call 800-488-8244.

In my 38 years of clinical social work I have referred many veterans to the Disabled American Veterans for help with claims; not one veteran complained about their service. DAV service representatives are trained in the intricacies of dealing with the VA and they never charge a fee.

Some of the information for this letter was taken from the January/February issue of the Disabled American Veterans magazine, page 11.

With respect for all veterans,
