Our local trails let us take a walk, a run, or a bicycle ride in the woods. They add to the property values of local towns, and make visiting Maine more attractive. They are proven to improve the physical and mental fitness of all who use them. And they are free and open to all.

All of our trails in Maine (except for state and national parks) were developed and continue to be maintained by volunteers, sometimes with town or city support. As the trails age, and climate change has an increasing impact on them, new trail development and maintenance becomes a bigger and more expensive job. Our organization, Kennebec Messalonskee Trails Inc., has struggled to keep up with these tasks, and trail volunteers all over the state face the same challenge.

Maine invests almost no funding in our trails even though they are a vital part of our outdoor recreation economy. The $30 million Trails Bond will provide much needed funding to design, build, and maintain trails of all types statewide. It is bipartisan, and widely supported by organizations, towns, businesses and the majority of Maine citizens.

You can help us continue to build and maintain this extraordinary system. Please contact your state representatives and ask them to support the Maine Trails Bond, L.D. 1156. It benefits all of us!
