Arthur Herbert Wells

WINTHROP – Mr. Arthur Herbert Wells, of Winthrop, passed away at Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta on April 24, 2024, with his son, Shawn and daughter-in-law, Bethany at his side.

Arthur was born July 4, 1942 in Augusta, son of the late Osborne Wells and Lucille (Tucker) Wells. He attended Monmouth School system. After graduating Arthur enlisted in the United States Navy in 1967 attaining the rank of 3rd Class Boatswain Mate.

After returning home from serving in the Navy, Arthur worked at Carlton Woolen Mill in Winthrop as a weaver for many years. He also started his own business as a local trash man.

Arthur was an active member of many veterans’ organizations including American Legion Post 40, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Winthrop Grange and was also involved with the Masons. He held leadership roles for many years. Arthur was an avid volunteer at Togas where he logged 8,750 hours working in the Chapel.

Arthur is survived by his son, Shawn and his daughter-in-law, Bethany Wells of Readfield; his special friend Cathy Bouchard, who lived and cared for Arthur for 25 years. Arthur is also survived by his siblings Lawrence Wells, Elenor Brennan, Norma Wells, Kenneth Wells; as well as many nieces and nephews. Arthur has many many friends including Lionel Levesque who was always by his side and was also well loved by the entire Winthrop community.

Arthur was predeceased by his parents; as well as his sister, Maxine Stevens and brother, Linwood Wells.

Shawn and Beth are eternally grateful to Cathy for the love, support and care shown to Arthur for many years.

Arthur’s graveside service with full Military honors will be on Tuesday, May 7, at 12 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Rd., Augusta. There will be a celebration of Arthur’s life immediately following graveside services at the American Legion on Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, from 1 to 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
