Alta W. Liscomb

HALLOWELL – Alta W. Liscomb, 90, of Hallowell passed away peacefully on April 13, 2024, at Maine General Hospital where she was comforted by loved ones in her final days.

She was born in Augusta on Aug. 28, 1933, to Vivian and Richard Carey. Alta dedicated over 70 years of her life to the Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell where she was a proud and involved parishioner. She served as the first female deacon in the church, was a member of the choir, and spent her time assisting with rummage sales, helping create cookbooks, and cooking and serving at church suppers.

In her younger years, Alta was fond of ceramics and took classes with her daughter where they designed pieces the family still enjoys today. She was also an avid tole painter, often taking her art on the road during summer stays at the Maine coast.

Alta worked in the cafeteria at Hall-Dale High School and then spent many years working for Key Bank. After retirement, she selflessly volunteered at Maine General Hospital for over two decades. She was proud of her work with the Smiley program, where she worked with children from all over; giving tours, explaining how the hospital works, and making it feel like a safe and welcoming place.

Alta enjoyed the simple things in life: watching the birds at her feeders, walking the beach and looking for shells during winter trips to Florida, and kayaking in the summer at her son’s camp on Pleasant River Lake. Above all else, she valued time with family and friends. She made each holiday, birthday, and family gathering special and took pleasure in seeing her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren together.

Alta was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Melanie Liscomb; her loving husband, Richard, with whom she shared nearly 70 years of marriage; and her sister, Patricia Tarr.

She is survived by her children, Deborah Ladd (Mark), Tim Liscomb (Linda), Jon Liscomb (Kimberly), and Scott Liscomb; her grandchildren, Sara Ladd-Suitter (Tim), Adam Liscomb (Danielle), Aaron Liscomb (Diane), and Amy Liscomb; and her great-grandchildren, Nikolas Ladd O’Connor, Gage Suitter, Kinsley Suitter, Payton Liscomb, Adien Liscomb, Parker Liscomb, and Sawyer Liscomb.

In her departure, Alta leaves behind a legacy of love and countless cherished memories. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Per her wishes, there will be a private family service.
