Stephen A. “Bumpa” Staples

JEFFERSON – Stephen A. “Bumpa” Staples, 69, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, in the Sussman House with his stepson, Richie, at his side following a brief illness.

Stephen was born Dec. 3, 1954, and was a graduate of Winthrop High School. He is the son of Roger Staples of Smithfield, and Doreen (Kneeland) Pastor of Anna Maria, Fla. Stephen has resided in Jefferson for a couple of years and previously resided in Hallowell.

He worked as a Maine Guide for the State of Maine, guiding at Pierce Pond for Cobbs Camp for over 40 years until his retirement. He was an accomplished Entrepreneur, he designed and built homes, was a well-known bait dealer for 40 years, and was currently Ellvering.

Stephen treasured the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed buying and collecting treasures. He raised Fox Red Labs at one time he had 14 Alpacas. He lobstered with his grandson. He was a kind gentleman who was always willing to try any adventure and always had a positive attitude when trying something new.

In addition to his parents, Stephen is survived by his stepson, Richard Nickless, and his wife Jennifer of Gardiner; his treasured grandchildren, Megan Hollingshead and husband Wesley Hollingshead, Zachary Nickless, Caleb Nickless, and Hannah Nickless; his loving great-grandchildren, Luke, and Lincoln Hollingshead; his brother, Lloyd Staples and partner David Broderick of Boston, Mass.; his stepdaughter, Melissa Goucher, and husband Doug Goucher of Winthrop; his stepsiblings Raymond Charles and Daniel Charles both of Mercer, Nancy Charles-French of North Belgrade, and Susan Nutter of Belgrade; his dear friend, Doris LaRochelle of Pittston. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Stephen was predeceased by a brother, Timothy B. Staples.

Stephen’s graveside service will be Friday, May 10, at 11 a.m. in the Smithfield Village Cemetery, Village Road, Smithfield.
