Walter Leland Ulmer

RANDOLPH – Walter Leland Ulmer, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 22, 2024 in Bradenton, Fla. where he and his beloved wife, Lorna Chase Ulmer wintered since January 1997.

Walter “Bucky”, son of the late Leland and Jeanette Lowell Ulmer, was born in Gardiner on Aug. 24, 1934. He grew up in Randolph and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1953. He was an athlete in high school lettering in baseball and wore his sweater to his 70th class reunion in July. His love of the game continued with the Randolph VFW team that took this minor league team to the National Amateur World Series held in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1953 and 1955. Also, he was a member of the Maine Army National Guard, Company M from 1953-1958.

Walter retired in December 1996 as Manager of the Meat Department at Goggin’s IGA. He was very proud of his tenure there greeting and serving the local folks in his beloved community of Randolph. In earlier years, he enjoyed deer hunting and especially rabbit hunting with his beagles, Tony and Lucky. Later in life, his passion became fishing on local lakes and camping in the Rangeley and Moosehead Lakes State Parks.

He is survived by his wife, Lorna, and they were blessed to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary Feb. 2, 2024. He is survived by their children, Linda (Bill) Dionne, Stephen (Marlene) Ulmer and Malcolm (Betty) Ulmer; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters Lois Curtis, Ruby Goggin, Geraldine Weed and Syrena Flagg.

A graveside service will be held on May 25 at 1 p.m. at the Maple Grove Extension Cemetery (outer Windsor Street) Randolph with an open house to follow at the Randolph United Methodist Church, 18 Asbury St. in Randolph.
