Clayton Wentworth

FREEDOM – Clayton Wentworth, 93, passed away on May 6, 2024. Clayton was born on June 26, 1930, on the farm where he lived his entire life. Clayton graduated from Freedom Academy before working full time on the farm with his father.

At age 24 Clayton took on the role of managing the farm and poultry operations when his father was tragically killed during hurricane Edna. Clayton ran the farm and raised chickens for over 25 years. He also worked later as a Registered Maine Guide and did some fur trapping. It was during this time of his life when he worked on the State of Maine Training vessel at the Maine Maritime Academy as a steamfitter, during the cadets’ training cruises. This gave a small-town farm boy from Freedom a chance to see the world. He travelled to Europe and the Mediterranean, bringing back stories (and wine) from Madeira, Spain. He also travelled south of the equator in one of the summer training trips to Brazil.

Clayton enjoyed the outdoors, he was an avid deer hunter even registering a buck, which he harvested on the farm, with Maine Antler and Skull Trophy Club (MASTC) He routinely had a vegetable garden which he not only enjoyed fresh, but also preserved as he was a talented canner. He put up green beans, peas, beets, tomato juice and sauce, and cabbage as sauerkraut to enjoy throughout the winter. He typically planted a couple of rows of prime garden space as gladiolus for his mother to enjoy, then saved the bulbs to plant the next year.

Clayton was a member of the Unity Lodge #58 Masons.

Clayton was preceded in death by his father, Wilbert, mother, Florence and brother, Bernie.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Alice; and nieces, Cesca (Supple) and Tricia (Ballweg) and nephews, Mark, and David.
