More than 2,800 homes and businesses in the Pittsfield area will soon have access to high-speed, fiber-optic internet from Fidium Fiber.
Fidium, which is a brand of Consolidated Communications Holdings Inc., plans to begin construction of its fiber network in Pittsfield and parts of Burnham, Detroit and Palmyra starting Wednesday, the company said in a news release.
Fidium offers high-speed, “multi-gig” fiber internet in eight states: California, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Texas and Vermont, according to its website.
The service has been expanding in Maine. As of the end of April, more than 250,000 homes and businesses across the state had access to Fidium’s internet service, the company said in a previous news release last month.
The company completed an expansion of its network to thousands of residences and businesses in the Skowhegan area in December, thanks in part to an $8.8 million grant funded in part by federal dollars.
The Pittsfield-area construction is not grant-funded but is part of Consolidated Communications’ efforts to expand access to its fiber internet to more parts of Maine, according to Kyle Thweatt, a spokesperson for Consolidated Communications.
Construction of the new Pittsfield-area expansion is expected to last a few months, Thweatt said.
The work may cause traffic detours, noise and dust as crews dig and climb utility poles to install the fiber, but crews will aim to limit disruptions, the company said. Crews will be working along the edge of private property, but within the public right-of-way and public utility easements.
“More information on the fiber build progress will be shared with town and city officials, as well as residents,” the company said in the news release. “Mailers, door hangers and construction alerts will be distributed to keep the public informed, and Fidium representatives will be visiting neighborhoods to share more about what to expect during construction and how to sign up to be the first notified as soon as service is ready to install.”
Area residents are asked to call Fidium at 877-769-4771 with any questions or concerns about construction.
Residents and business owners can check service availability for their address, as well as construction progress, at FidiumFiber.com.
