Stephen P. Gagliardi

AUGUSTA – Stephen P. Gagliardi, 75, of Oakland, died on May 22, 2024, at the VA’s Togus Springs hospice after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born April 28, 1949, to Domenick and Frances Gagliardi, and grew up in East Greenwich, R.I., with summers in Brooklin. He attended Yale University where he played football and rowed crew before leaving and joining the United States Navy in 1969.

He married Martha Shaughnessey on May 2, 1970. He served as an electronics technician, attaining ET First Class in 1973. After discharge, he went to work for the Burroughs Corporation as a field service technician in Rhode Island. He transferred to northern Vermont in 1978 and moved to Peacham, Vt., where he and Martha raised their three boys.

Steve was the consummate fixer – his professional work began with mechanical adding machines and check sorters and spanned the entire history of computers. He ultimately retired from Maine General Medical Center in 2015 after working on servers for cancer therapy machines and the IT rollout of the Harold Alfond Cancer Center.

Upon retirement he became handyman to the Sisters of St. Joseph in Winslow, a job he loved. He was happiest in and around boats, especially sailing on Eggemoggin Reach. One of the best moments of his Naval career was winning the 5th Naval District sailing championship in 1971.

He was pre-deceased by his parents. He is survived by Martha, his beloved wife of 54 years; brothers Paul and wife Alison of Oakland, and Donald and wife Rebecca Reslock of New Hartford, Conn.; sons Joshua and wife Christine Gagliardi of Lake Mary, Fla., James Gagliardi and fiancée Mary Deal of Prosperity, S.C., and Richard and wife Monica Gagliardi of Taunton, Mass.; his grandchildren Anna, Emily, and Ryan; numerous cousins; and his dutiful bearded collie, Griffin.

The family especially thanks the hospital and hospice staff of the Veterans Administration at Togus and Northern Light Homecare for the gentle care Steve received at the end of his life.

Calling hours will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 60 Eustis Parkway, Waterville, on Tuesday, May 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waterville on Wednesday, May 29 at 11 a.m. A burial in Brooklin will take place at a future date.
