Auditions for “Miss Holmes Returns” are set for 4-6 p.m. Sunday, June 16, and from 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 17, at the Waterville Opera House, 93 Main St.

Callbacks will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 20.

A nurse and activist finds herself on the run, wanted for murder. Pursued by authorities who choose to ignore a clear case of self-defense due to her Indian heritage and influence from sinister figures from the shadowy criminal underworld, she turns to Miss Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Dorothy Watson for help.

“Miss Holmes Returns” is theatrical fan fiction that explores feminist themes using the characters, settings, and tropes created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to explore the added challenges and risks faced by these iconic characters if they were women, while also examining the intersections of sexism, classism and racism.

Waterville Opera House seeks a diverse group of singers, actors and performers, including gender identities, body types, ages, abilities, sexual orientation, and ethnic and racial backgrounds. Waterville Opera House seeks to fill all roles as stated in the character descriptions; all ethnicities are welcome.

For Sherlock Holmes and Dorothy Watson, female actors are sought to reflect the gender-swapping of these traditionally male characters. The opera house is seeking actors of Indian/ Middle Eastern descent for the role of Priya. For all other characters, the opera house is open to actors of all gender identities.

Show dates are set for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 6 and at 2 p.m. Sept. 1 and 8.
